Aerocort Rotacaps 100mcg/100mcg is a prescription-strength, dual-action dry powder inhalation (DPI) therapy formulated for the regular management and long-term control of chronic asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Manufactured by Cipla Ltd, these inhalation capsules are specifically designed to be used exclusively with a dry powder inhaler device, such as the Cipla Rotahaler or Revolizer. By delivering a targeted combination of a powerful anti-inflammatory corticosteroid and a fast-acting bronchodilator directly to the lungs, Aerocort Rotacaps work systematically to prevent wheezing, chronic coughing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.

Product Overview & Key Features

Aerocort Rotacaps represent a reliable therapeutic approach for individuals requiring daily respiratory maintenance. Unlike standard rescue therapies that only provide brief relief from a sudden spasm, these dry powder capsules target both primary features of chronic respiratory diseases—tissue inflammation and acute airway constriction.

  • Synergistic Dual Formulation: Features a fixed-dose combination of Beclomethasone Dipropionate (100mcg) and Levosalbutamol / Levalbuterol (100mcg) per capsule.
  • Dry Powder Inhalation (DPI) System: Utilizes the patient's own natural breath to draw the therapeutic powder deep into the lower bronchial branches, eliminating the coordination issues associated with aerosol sprays.
  • Dual-Action Airway Support: Simultaneously acts as an anti-inflammatory controller to decrease long-term mucosal swelling and a bronchodilator to relax airway muscles.
  • Clinically Preferred Isomer: Contains levosalbutamol, the active single isomer of salbutamol, which selectively treats lung tissue while reducing unwanted cardiovascular side effects.
  • Hygienic Single-Dose Design: Each dose is individually sealed inside a gelatin capsule to protect the dry powder from moisture degradation and ambient humidity.

Understanding the Dual Active Ingredients

To understand how Aerocort Rotacaps optimize lung health, it helps to examine the mechanism of action behind its two powerful components:

  1. Beclomethasone Dipropionate (100mcg): This is a synthetic corticosteroid. When the dry powder reaches the lungs, it actively suppresses the localized immune responses responsible for chronic inflammation. By reducing the activity of inflammatory cells, it significantly diminishes airway wall swelling, cellular irritation, and excessive mucus accumulation over time.
  2. Levosalbutamol (100mcg): This is a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist (bronchodilator). It acts swiftly upon inhalation by binding to the smooth muscle receptors surrounding the constricted bronchial tubes. This binding tells the tight, spasming muscles to relax completely, allowing the narrowed airways to dilate rapidly so oxygen can move freely in and out of the lungs.

Primary Benefits of Regular Therapy

  • Prevents Asthma Exacerbations: Daily maintenance keeps the bronchial lining calm and less reactive, drastically reducing the occurrence of acute, dangerous asthma attacks.
  • Improves Daily Functional Breathing Capacity: Lowering respiratory resistance allows patients to carry out routine physical activities, walk, and exercise with far less shortness of breath.
  • Reduces Emergency Rescue Medication Reliance: Establishing a stable daily respiratory baseline naturally minimizes the frequency with which a patient needs to use emergency rescue inhalers.
  • Optimized Safety Profile: The use of levosalbutamol instead of older, racemic alternatives minimizes the risk of experiencing a racing pulse, palpitations, or shaky hands.

Step-by-Step Administration Guide

For dry powder medications to penetrate deep into the lower respiratory tract, proper technique with the inhaler device is essential. Please Note: Rotacaps must never be swallowed orally.

  1. Prepare the Device: Hold your Rotahaler or Revolizer device horizontally. Open the base and insert one Aerocort Rotacap firmly into the designated capsule chamber.
  2. Pierce or Separate the Capsule: Close the device firmly or twist the barrel as directed by the device instructions to split or pierce the capsule, releasing the dry powder inside the chamber.
  3. Exhale Fully Away From the Device: Take a deep breath in and blow it out completely through your mouth. Never exhale into the device mouthpiece, as the moisture from your breath will cause the fine powder to clump.
  4. Inhale Deeply and Forcefully: Place the mouthpiece securely between your teeth and close your lips tightly around it to form a complete seal. Breathe in through your mouth as quickly, deeply, and forcefully as you possibly can.
  5. Hold Your Breath: Remove the device from your mouth and close your lips. Hold your breath for roughly 10 seconds, or for as long as is comfortably possible, to allow the microscopic powder to settle inside your lungs.
  6. Check the Capsule: Open the device to ensure all the powder has been inhaled. If some powder remains, repeat the inhalation steps. Discard the empty gelatin shell after use.
  7. Post-Use Mouth Rinse: Crucial Safety Step: Always rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and spit it out after completing your dose. Do not swallow the rinse water.

Preventing Side Effects: The Rinsing Mandate

Because Aerocort contains the corticosteroid beclomethasone, any dry powder that inadvertently deposits on the tongue, throat, or gums can cause local side effects by temporarily lowering local immunity.

  • Oral Thrush (Candidiasis): Appears as uncomfortable white fungal patches inside the cheeks or on the tongue.
  • Hoarseness or Dysphonia: A raspy voice, dry tickle, or cough immediately following inhalation.

Rinsing your mouth thoroughly, gargling, or brushing your teeth right after your daily treatment removes any lingering surface powder and completely prevents these conditions from developing.

Possible Systemic Side Effects & Management

Although rare due to the localized delivery of the medicine, some individuals may experience mild side effects as their body adapts:

  • Mild Muscle Tremors: Typically observed as a light shaking in the fingers or hands, which usually decreases with continued use.
  • Headache or Dry Mouth: Manageable with rest and ensuring adequate daily hydration.
  • Transient Palpitations: A briefly noticeable accelerated heartbeat. If this feeling persists or becomes uncomfortable, seek advice from your physician.

Important Precautions & Warnings

  • Not for Acute, Emergency Reliever Use: Aerocort Rotacaps are a preventative, daily maintenance therapy. They will not stop an ongoing, severe asthma attack or acute bronchospasm. Always carry a fast-acting rescue inhaler for immediate emergency symptom relief.
  • Pre-existing Medical Conditions: Consult your prescribing physician if you have a history of cardiovascular disease, severe hypertension, overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), diabetes, epilepsy, or active infections like pulmonary tuberculosis.
  • Pregnancy and Lactation: This combination should only be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding under the explicit direction and close monitoring of your medical specialist.
  • Do Not Discontinue Abruptly: Never stop using your Rotacaps or reduce your dosage on your own, even if your breathing feels completely clear. Sudden cessation can cause your underlying airway inflammation to return aggressively, causing severe breathing distress.
