Nailrox 8% Nail Lacquer (5ml) is a specialized prescription topical antifungal medication manufactured by Intas Pharmaceuticals Ltd. It contains Ciclopirox (8% w/v) and is primarily prescribed to treat mild-to-moderate fungal infections of the fingernails and toenails (onychomycosis).

🎯 Primary Therapeutic Uses

·         Onychomycosis Management: Targets superficial fungal nail infections caused by dermatophytes (like Trichophyton rubrum) and yeasts, helping reduce nail thickening, brittleness, and discoloration.

·         Adjacent Skin Care: Manages fungal spread onto the immediate skin tissue directly surrounding the infected nail border.

⚙️ How It Works

Ciclopirox works differently than many standard antifungals. It is a broad-spectrum agent that operates via a chelation effect. It binds tightly to specific metallic cations (like iron and aluminium) inside the fungal cells. This binding blocks crucial cellular enzymes, disrupting the fungus's ability to break down cell peroxides. Ultimately, this process halts cell division, stops protein production, and kills the infection-causing fungus at its source.

📋 Correct Application Protocol

Because nail tissue is thick, this medicine relies on regular, long-term adherence. Unless your doctor instructs otherwise, standard clinical application rules include:

·         Prep the Nail: Before your first application, clip away any loose nail fragments and gently file down the hyperkeratinized (thickened) surface of the infected nail.

·         Nightly Application: Brush a thin layer of the lacquer evenly over the entire surface of the affected nail plate, extending to 5 mm of the surrounding skin. If possible, apply it to the underside of the nail bed as well. This is best done at bedtime.

·         Let It Dry: Allow the lacquer to dry for roughly 30 seconds before covering your feet with socks or footwear.

·         Avoid Early Washing: Do not wash or submerge the treated area for at least 8 hours post-application to ensure the drug fully penetrates the nail plate.

·         Weekly Removal: Every 7 days, completely remove the built-up lacquer layers using isopropyl alcohol or standard lacquer remover. Trim and file away any newly detached, infected nail material before painting a fresh coat back on.

·         No Cosmetics: Strictly avoid applying decorative nail polish, topcoats, or artificial nails over the treated area, as they block the medication from working.

⚠️ Common Side Effects

Topical nail lacquers have minimal absorption into the bloodstream, meaning side effects are almost exclusively localized near the application site. You may notice:

·         Redness (erythema) or mild swelling of the skin folds surrounding the nail

·         A mild stinging, burning, or itching sensation upon application

·         Temporary changes in nail shape or superficial nail discoloration

🛑 Crucial Safety Warnings

·         Patience is Key: Fungal nail treatments require a long timeline because clear sections will only emerge as new nail tissue regenerates. Fingernail courses typically require 6 months, while toenail roots can take up to 12 months to clear.

·         Underlying Medical Conditions: Consult your healthcare professional closely prior to use if you have diabetes, poor peripheral blood circulation, or structural nerve conditions like peripheral neuropathy, as fungal nail care requires specialized monitoring in these populations.

·         Pregnancy & Lactation: It is generally designated as Pregnancy Category B. While topical application poses low systemic risk, always confirm its safety profile with your obstetrician if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

·         Flammability: The liquid lacquer is flammable. Keep the bottle tightly capped and stored safely away from open flames, high heat sources, or direct sunlight.
