Obelit 60mg Capsule is a prescription anti-obesity medication manufactured by Intas Pharmaceuticals Ltd that contains Orlistat (60mg). It is indicated for weight management and the long-term treatment of obesity when combined with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet and regular physical exercise.
🎯 Primary Therapeutic Uses
· Obesity Management: Assists overweight or obese individuals in losing excess body weight.
· Weight Maintenance: Helps prevent patients from regaining weight that they have already successfully lost.
· Risk Reduction: By promoting weight loss, it can help manage weight-related comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol levels.
⚙️ How It Works
Orlistat is classified as a peripheral lipase inhibitor. It works locally within the gastrointestinal tract (stomach and small intestine) rather than affecting the central nervous system or suppressing appetite.
· It binds to and blocks gastric and pancreatic enzymes called lipases.
· These enzymes are normally responsible for breaking down dietary fats into absorbable fatty acids.
· By inhibiting lipases, Obelit 60mg prevents roughly 30% of the fat consumed in a meal from being digested.
· This unabsorbed fat cannot be taken up by the body and is instead excreted naturally through bowel movements, decreasing total caloric intake
📋 Correct Administration & Dietary Routine
· Timing: Take one capsule orally three times daily. It should be swallowed whole with water immediately before, during, or up to 1 hour after each main meal.
· The Fat-Free Meal Rule: Because the drug only acts on dietary fats, skip the dose if you miss a meal entirely or if you eat a meal that contains absolutely no fat
· Dietary Balancing: Your daily nutritional intake should be evenly distributed across three main meals, with no more than 30% of your total daily calories coming from fat. Avoid meals excessively high in fat (e.g., deep-fried foods, heavy oils, fatty meats), as this will drastically worsen gastrointestinal side effects.
⚠️ Common Gastrointestinal Side Effects
Because unabsorbed fat passes directly into the large intestine, side effects are primarily digestive and typically occur during the first few weeks of therapy. They include:
· Oily spotting or liquid discharge on underwear
· Flatulence (gas) accompanied by oily discharge
· Fatty, greasy, or oily stools
· Increased frequency of bowel movements and fecal urgency
· Mild abdominal pain or bloating
🛑 Crucial Safety Warnings
· Vitamin Malabsorption: Orlistat impairs the body's capacity to absorb fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) and beta-carotene. It is highly recommended to take a daily multivitamin supplement at bedtime (at least 2 hours apart from an Obelit dose) to prevent nutritional deficiencies.
· Contraindications: Do not take this medication if you suffer from chronic malabsorption syndrome, cholestasis (a liver condition involving bile flow obstruction), or have a known allergy to Orlistat.
· Pregnancy & Lactation: Obelit 60mg is strictly contraindicated during pregnancy as weight loss offers no potential benefit to a pregnant woman and may cause fetal harm. It is also not recommended for breastfeeding mothers.
· Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor if you take Warfarin or blood thinners (as Orlistat can increase bleeding risks), Cyclosporine (immunosuppressant levels may drop), Levothyroxine (thyroid control can change), or anti-epileptic medications.
· Oral Contraceptives: If you experience severe diarrhea while taking Obelit, the absorption of oral birth control pills may fail. Use an additional barrier method of contraception to prevent unintended pregnancy.
· Clinical Evaluation: If you have been consistently taking the medicine alongside proper diet and exercise and have not lost at least 5% of your baseline body weight after 12 weeks, consult your doctor to determine if the treatment should be discontinued.
